Boson Mo, Violin

Winner of Third Prize at the 2013 Michael Hill International Violin Competition, Boson was named one of Canada’s “30 under 30 Top Classical Musicians of 2015” by CBC Radio-Canada and was recently featured on the January 2024 issue of Strings Magazine. He is a recipient of the “Prix Joseph-Rouleau” at the 2010 Montreal International Violin Competition, as well as a top 25 candidate at the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition and a winner of Canada’s prestigious Sylva Gelber Foundation Award. Boson has twice won the Canada Council for the Arts’ Musical Instrument Bank loan and has been a candidate at top international violin competitions such as the Queen Elisabeth, Indianapolis, and Singapore.

Boson has been featured as Young Artist in Residence of American Public Media’s “Performance Today” and has been broadcast both nationally in the U.S. as well as internationally on Radio New Zealand and CBC Radio-Canada. He has performed as a soloist with the Auckland Philharmonia (New Zealand), Orchestre symphonique de Longueuil (Canada), and the Houston Symphony; he has also been featured at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Aspen Music Festival and School, Festival de Lanaudière (Québec), Rockport Chamber Music Festival, Début Atlantic, Jeunesses Musicales du Canada, Montreal Chamber
Music Festival, Vancouver Chamber Music Society, Müzewest of Vancouver, Festival Pontiac Enchanté, Kalmia Gardens Music Festival, Music@Menlo’s Winter Residency, the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the Festival Emilia-Romangna in Italy.

Boson was appointed to the position of Concertmaster at The Phoenix Symphony in September 2023 by Maestro Tito Muñoz and has recently served as Acting Assistant Concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Guest Principal Second at the Minnesota Orchestra, and Guest Concertmaster at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Previously, he was appointed to the violin section of the Houston Symphony by Maestro Andrés Orozco-Estrada in September 2019 and then to the position of Assistant Concertmaster by Maestro Juraj Valčuha in November 2023. He joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as part of its 2022 European Festivals Tour and has also performed as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Boson is an alum of Music@Menlo’s International Program, the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Perlman Music Program, the Masterclasses and Chamber Music Residency at Banff Centre, the International Holland Music Sessions (Netherlands), Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, Morningside Music Bridge, the Toronto Summer Music Festival, and the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival (Italy). Boson is eternally thankful for his teachers, Paul Kantor, Keqiang Li, and Li Jin. A graduate of both the Cleveland Institute of Music and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, Boson currently performs on a violin by MacArthur Genius Grant recipient Joseph Curtin.
