Xiaohan Sun, Viola

Violist Xiaohan Sun joins the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 2019 having previously served as a violist fellow at the new world symphony for their 2018/19 season. Prior to her appointment with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Sun is an alumna of the New York String Orchestra Seminar, the Pacific Music Festival, the Aspen Music Festival and the Kent/Blossom Music Festival. She has previously performed with orchestras such as Cleveland Orchestra, Houston Symphony and Akron Symphony. With the Houston Symphony, she performed on their European Tour under Andrés Orozco Estrada in 2018.

A native of Wuhan, China, Sun began her studies of the violin at the age of four and later was drawn to the viola at 13. Sun received her bachelor’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, as well as her master’s degree as a Robert L. Lohse Memorial scholarship recipient at the Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Her mentors have included James Dunham, Jeffrey Irvine and Lynne Ramsey, with additional instruction from Heidi Castleman, Joan DerHovsepian and Robert Vernon. Outside of music, Sun enjoys reading Chinese literature and detective novels.
