Jack Walters was appointed Assistant Principal and E-flat Clarinet of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2024 by Music Director Jader Bignamini, after originally joining the orchestra on second clarinet in 2017 under the direction of Music Director Laureate Leonard Slatkin.
In 2016, Jack was awarded the prestigious Zarin Mehta Global Academy Fellowship with the New York Philharmonic. He joined Clarinetissimo in Seattle, WA as a featured artist and clinician, and is also an active chamber musician, frequently performing with New Music Detroit and Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings.
In the summers of 2016 and 2017, Jack was a participant at the Music Academy of the West, supported by the Spencer and Myra Nadler Scholarship. He has also performed at the Texas Music Festival and the Kent Blossom Music Festival.
Jack earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, studying with Dan Gilbert and Chad Burrow, and completed his graduate studies at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University with Richie Hawley. His other primary teachers include Sean Osborn and Craig Lawrence.
He is a D’Addario Woodwinds artist and performs exclusively on Reserve Classic reeds.
