Mexican-American baritone Schyler Vargas is establishing himself as a versatile talent, bringing interdisciplinary performances to the operatic, theatrical, and concert stage. Noted as a “distinguished” (Washington Classical Review) and “powerful baritone,” (Washington Post) his work has been featured on PBS News Hour and NPR, among other publications.
Schyler’s recent highlights include his Off-Broadway debut as Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny in the Drama Desk Award winning production of Masquerade, as well as performing at Carnegie Hall twice as Connie/Ragged Man in The Grapes of Wrath alongside Nathan Gunn and Margaret Latimore and Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe as Strephon with Christine Ebersole and Santino Fontana, both conducted and directed by Ted Sperling.
Schyler’s 2026-2027 season exhibits the variety in his career, beginning with the premiere of A River Runs Through It with Opera Montana as Norman Maclean; part of Opera Wire’s 10 anticipated productions of the 2026/27 season. Followed by two back to back shows at the Paramount Theatre in Chicago as Fred in A Christmas Carol and Soldier/George cover in Sunday in the Park with George, and reprising his role as Frank Schultz in Francesca Zambello’s production of Show Boat with Houston Grand Opera.
An award winning performer, Schyler has seen success in competitions most recently as a finalist in two multi-genre competitions: the Lotte Lenya Competition and the American Traditions Competition in 2025. He was also the 1st place in Tri-Cities Opera’s Vocal Competition, two time winner of the Rocky Mountain District in the Laffont Competition with the Metropolitan Opera, 2nd place and Audience Favorite in the Harold Haugh Light Opera Competition, 2nd place at the Denver Lyric Opera Guild Aria Competition, and two time District Winner in the Dorothy Lincoln-Smith Voice Competition.
On the concert stage, Schyler has performed as the baritone soloist for Vaughn William’s Five Mystical Songs, Hansel’s Messiah, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle, Schubert’s Mass in Ab, and Mark Hayes’ Requiem.
