Saxophone Eastman School of Music Chicago Freelancer
Mike Matlock is a freelance woodwind doubler working in pit orchestras throughout the greater Chicago area, and a teacher.
Mike recently celebrated 11 years as a 1st grade classroom teacher, which he left last summer to pursue freelancing full time. He is now adjunct woodwind faculty at the Francis W. Parker School, a private school in Lincoln Park, and a teaching artist with the Ravinia Festival.
Mike is hired to perform on flute, piccolo, oboe, English Horn, clarinet, saxophone(s) and bassoon. Recent credits include Paramount Theatre: Elf, the Musical, Cabaret, Legally Blonde, Wizard of Oz, Producers; Porchlight Music Theatre: A Chorus Line, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, and Scottsboro Boys; Marriott Theatre: Oklahoma!; Chicago Shakespeare Theatre: Peter Pan. This summer Mike will be premiering a new musical at the Adirondack Theater Festival in Glens Falls, NY, and brand new re-orchestrations of Into the Woods at Writers Theatre in Glencoe, IL.
As a saxophone major at the Eastman School of Music, Mike enjoyed performing and competing with his saxophone quartet, ViM. The group took home a gold medal from the Fischoff Chamber Music competition, performed a concerto with the Eastman Wind Ensemble, a solo recital at the Kennedy Center, and a master class and performance at Brown University. The group performed all of their music entirely from memory, and frequently transcribed string quartets.
Mike is happy to be back at LAMF for his second summer, and proud to watch his colleagues bring world-class performances and tremendous growth to this enthusiastic community over the last 10 years.
