Matthew McDonald, Bassoon

Matthew McDonald is a bassoonist who enjoys a varied career as a chamber musician, soloist, and orchestral musician. As Principal Bassoonist in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, he has performed concertos by Mozart, Strauss, and Vivaldi. From 2010-2022, Matthew was Co-Artistic Director of Twickenham Fest, a chamber music festival he co-founded in his hometown of Huntsville, Alabama. He’s studied with Bernard Garfield and Daniel Matsukawa at the Curtis Institute of Music. Other teachers include Barrick Stees, as part of the Cleveland Institute of Music Young Artist Program, and Benjamin Kamins, who he studied with in high school as well as at Rice University. He’s been a part of festivals such as Schleswig-Holstein, and the Tanglewood Music Center. Nowadays, Matt enjoys walks in the park near his house, and cooking for his wife two children.
