James Rotondo, Opera

James Rotondo is a set designer for opera and theatre based in Boston, Massachusetts. Approaching design from a background as a former performer and studio artist, his work often focuses on creating a dynamic relationship between performer, space, and audience. He is particularly interested in exploring conventional spaces in unconventional ways and bringing stories beyond “traditional” in both expectation and location. James and his team of collaborators were recently selected as finalists for the 2022 Tobin Director-Designer Prize and presented their design at the 2023 Opera America Conference. In 2021, he was the production designer for the opera film The Knock, which was nominated for a Digital Excellence Award. Other recent designs include the premiere of The Rip Van Winkles at the Glimmerglass Festival, Bandstand at Playhouse on Park, Rigoletto at Intermountain Opera Bozeman, L'Incoronazione di Poppea at the Manhattan School of Music, and Make Way For Ducklings at Wheelock Family Theatre.
