LAMFcast; In Depth with Allison Chu

July 28, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

  • « LAMFcast; Symphony 101
  • LAMFcast; Musician Coffee Q&As »

We are pleased to welcome guest lecturer Allison Chu of Yale University for weekly video presentations on various topics. We’ll go in depth like never before with Allison as our guide! Interactive sessions will give you the chance to ask questions along the way.

Opening Up the Genre of Contemporary Classical Music

What does classical music look and sound like today? To answer this question, we’ll need to go back to 1960s New York, where a group of American composers experimented with making music from the most simplistic of elements. We’ll then survey some of the modern classical music that has ventured in different technological, virtuosic, and artistic directions. We’ll look at the blend between classical and other genres of music, find where classical music has incorporated new sounds, and think about classical music in new spaces. What sorts of techniques do composers utilize today? Where does this music get performed, and why? Where is contemporary classical music headed? For this session Allison will be joined by special guest, composer Derrick Spiva, Jr.
