Prairie Bay, Baxter

“Barber’s Violin Concerto is a work that resonates with performers and audiences alike because of its soaring lines for the solo violin, the rich orchestral textures, and its quintessentially romantic spirit. For me, I think it’s not solely because of its beautiful melodies and singing nature that I’m drawn to this piece. I hear within this Concerto a vast universe in which Barber doesn’t shy away from the furthest corners of our human experience – from open optimism and fiery displays of virtuosity, to a mysterious and, occasionally, haunting melancholy. The duality of this work draws me back to this work time and time again. I’m very much looking forward to collaborating with the Lakes Area Music Festival on this American masterpiece!”

“Appalachian Spring is celebrated because its music, dance, visuals, and inspiration were each truly ‘American’. In 1944, Martha Graham and Aaron Copland collaborated to portray the pioneer history of America– not your typical ballet topic. This is an interesting work to reimagine today, and we look forward to sharing the stage with LAMF for a third season of music and dance.”
