Spencer Frie is Orchestra Director at Brainerd High School, teaching three orchestras, guitar, and string lessons for students in grades 9-12. He maintains a private studio of cello students from Brainerd and surrounding areas. Prior to coming to Brainerd, Spencer led the orchestra program in Crookston, MN, teaching grades 4-12. He has served as conductor and section coach at various youth orchestras and chamber music camps throughout Minnesota.
An active cellist, Spencer is principal cello of the Heartland Symphony, which he joined in 2015, and has been a member of the St. Cloud Symphony since 2007. Additionally, Spencer has played with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony and Greater Grand Forks Symphony, among others. Spencer performs regularly with his quartet, Main Street Quartet, around the Twin Cities.
Spencer has participated in master classes and lessons with cellists Amit Peled, Tony Ross, Mark Rudoff, Betsy Husby, and Anthony Arnone. He has played in chamber ensembles for master classes with the Miró, Parker, Escher, and Jasper String Quartets. Spencer’s primary cello teachers include Lucia Magney, Greg Hamilton, and Simona Barbu. He earned his B.A. in Instrumental Music Education and Cello Performance from St. John’s University.
